School has Begun!

How has pre-season Fall Sports gone?

It has been a robust pre-season fall sports period here at Portledge. Both the Varsity Girls and Boys Soccer teams had over 25 individuals come out in an effort to make those very competitive teams. It is important to note that even if an individual doesn't wind up making one of the varsity soccer teams, all the athletes have benefited through their exposure to the Varsity coaches and the pace of Varsity play. Another important fact to note is that any individual wishing to play soccer in the Upper School may still join one of the JV squads. These teams began their official practices on Thursday, September 6 -- the first day of school! Varsity Girls Tennis had 11 girls participate in the pre-season program and these 11 look to be the make-up of the Varsity team. Any other girls wishing to participate in the tennis program are invited to begin at the Intramural level. This group began also began meeting on September 6. Varsity Cross-Country is the only Varsity program that is still open to new participants. If you are interested in joining the cross-country team, you should speak with Dr. Sarles and come out as soon as possible. The first IPPSAL Cross-Country meet is on Wednesday, October 3. The Athletic Department is very pleased with the commitment of all the pre-season athletes and the dedication of all the coaches. An upcoming entry will include an outlook on all the Varsity teams and a report on some early season contests.

What's going on this weekend?

This Saturday, September 8 will be the "Kick-off" of the Varsity Girls and Boys Soccer seasons. Both teams will take on very competitive sides from the Friends-Seminary School of NYC. These soccer matches will begin at 2:00pm. There will also be the annual "Interschool Fun-Run" hosted by the Cross-Country team -- if you are interested gather by the tennis courts at 2:30pm and the shotgun start will be at 3:00. All of these events will be followed by a BBQ for all players, parents and fans in attendance. So come on out and cheer on the Panthers and chow down on some burgers and dogs. Look forward to seeing all of you.

When do Middle School sports start?

Middle Schoolers met with me on Thursday, September 6 to go over their options and procedures of the Athletic Department. They will begin practicing on Monday, September 10th so all students should bring appropriate athletic wear on that day. Portledge athletic apparel will be available in the athletic store and all students will be assigned a locker at that time. The Athletic Department is looking forward to continuing the great momentum established over the last few years in Middle School sports. Go Panthers!!
